Customer Profile: Boise Inc.

Boise logoBoise Inc. manufactures a wide range of specialty and premium paper products, including papers for pressure-sensitive and flexible packaging applications. The company is a Clean Wind customer that has, over the last five years, decreased use of purchased fossil fuels in its paper mills by approximately 28 percent.

Why did Boise Inc. decide to purchase renewable power?

One of the company’s core values is managing its businesses to sustain environmental resources for future generations. Participating in PGE’s large business Clean Wind program is part of that effort. It’s also consistent with the company’s multi-faceted commitment to sustainability — environmental, social, and economic. In part because of these efforts the company’s St. Helens mill has been recommended for ISO 14001 environmental certification.

What are some of Boise Inc.'s other “green” initiatives?

The company believes another important step toward sustainability is using energy intelligently. From 1996 to 2007, Boise Inc.’s paper mills have reduced total energy use 11 percent. Over the same 11 years, the papermaking operations increased energy self-sufficiency from 59 percent to 64 percent of total energy consumption.

Boise Inc. has also pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 10 percent by 2014, a goal set in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders partnership. Part of this effort involves continuing to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, while increasing its use of renewable biomass energy beyond its current 60+ percent level.
